Angels’ two assistant GMs to leave organization

Jonathan Strangio and Steve Martone, the two assistant general managers left at the top of the Angels baseball operations department after Billy Eppler was fired , are both leaving the organization. Their contracts expired Saturday. Strangio informed the club months ago of a plan to relocate to the East Coast for family reasons at the conclusion of his contract. The reason for Martone’s departure is unclear. Strangio had spent nine years with the Angels, the last four as an assistant general manager. Martone was hired by Eppler early in his tenure. The Angels are losing two of the top executives who could have helped to run the baseball operations while the club conducts a thorough search for Eppler’s replacement. So far there are 10 confirmed candidates on the list for interviews, with a decision not expected for at least a few weeks. Tony La Russa, who had been a special assistant in baseball operations and was said to be helping to lead the department during the transition, is

Another Horse Dies From Racing Injury at Los Alamitos

CYPRESS (CNS) – Another horse has died at Los Alamitos Race Course — at least the 26th horse to die from a racing or training injury at the Cypress track this year. Hit It Up was injured on Oct. 23 in the eighth race. He was a 2-year- old gelding owned by Ernesto Parra and trained by Ramiro Lopez Zuazo. His jockey in the fatal race was Ruben Lozano. A Los Alamitos official told City News Service on Oct. 24 that the horse walked inside the equine medical transport unit on his own and walked out of it on his own after the injury, and was back in his barn with his trainer the next morning. He died Oct. 28, according to the California Horse Racing Board. Dr. Rick Arthur, equine medical director for the CHRB, told the Los Angeles Times that Hit It Up was examined by a board vet and by Zuazo’s veterinarian. Arthur added that the injury was consistent with a spine injury but was awaiting a necropsy result before determining the official cause of death. In addition to the 26 racing and tr

Two men killed in pair of Colton shootings within less than a mile, minutes apart

Two men were killed in a pair of shootings early Saturday morning in Colton, occurring within minutes of each other, separated only by less than a mile, authorities said. Investigators have yet to determine whether the two shootings were related to one another. “We’re looking into the possibility that they’re connected,” said Colton police Lt. Ray Mendez. The first shooting was reported to police about 1:56 a.m. after someone had called authorities about a man found lying unresponsive on the street in the 700 block of North Kippy Drive, the Colton Police Department said in a news release. Officers found the victim, identified by authorities as a 23-year-old man from Lucerne Valley, with multiple life-threatening gunshot wounds. The man was transported to a local hospital where he died of his injuries, police said. Minutes later, at 2:07 a.m., officers responded to the 1000 block of West Kimberly Avenue for a second shooting, police said. Located less than a mile from the Kippy D

Dominic Kinnear sad to be Galaxy interim coach again

For the second time in three seasons, Dominic Kinnear is back as interim coach of the Galaxy. Kinnear, who joined the Galaxy in 2017 as an assistant under Sigi Schmid, took over for the last month of the 2018 season when Schmid stepped down. Sunday night will be his first of three games in a week back in the interim role, replacing Guillermo Barros Schelotto, who was fired Thursday. “Sadly, this is my second time doing this,” Kinnear said. “The first time, I’ll be honest with you, was much more difficult. Sigi (Schmid) and I had a wonderful relationship that spanned many years, so when I first found out about that my heart was completely broken. I had a conversation with Sigi and Sigi was completely behind me taking over the team for the rest of the season. It was very hard for me to do. “Sometimes when this happens, you’re either bad luck, experienced or both … the first thing I said to them was we have to understand that we’re all in the locker room together because of Guillermo.
