Travel: Cirque du Soleil rolls the dice on ‘R.U.N,’ its new Las Vegas show

Image
It’s only 2.3 miles from Treasure Island to Luxor walking The Strip, but the distance between Cirque du Soleil experiences at each place is as vast as easing into a comfy slipper versus wobbling over jagged glass in a 6-inch stiletto heel. Since 1993. T.I. has housed “Mystère,” the storied French-Canadian troupe’s re-invention of the circus. This was Cirque’s first show not in a traveling big top tent, but in permanent residence a Vegas casino. Meantime, a radically bold rethink of the Cirque concept called “R.U.N” (think “are you in”) is around three months old at Luxor. Amazon tops 500,000 U.S. workers for the first time

By Joseph Pisani, The Associated Press Need more proof that Amazon is big? It came this week. Amazon’s U.S. workforce has topped 500,000 for the first time, up 43% from the year before and more than triple what it was five years ago, the company said Friday. It gained 150,000 workers last year, more than the size of Apple’s entire workforce. It employs some 20,000 people in the Inland Empire at more than 14 distribution centers. When it reported its quarterly performance Thursday, Amazon revealed that 150 million people were paying to be members of its Prime service, which offers fast shipping and other perks. On Friday, even while the Dow fell 600 points, Amazon shares soared passed $2,000 apiece, doubling in price in about two years. CEO and founder Jeff Bezos, the world’s richest man, also saw his fortune swell by $7.9 billion, rising to $124.2 billion Friday. Amazon’s growth comes with increased scrutiny. Some Democratic presidential candidates want to break it up. Others want

Dodgers’ chances of big trade for Mookie Betts still alive

LOS ANGELES — Winter might not be over yet. With Dodgers pitchers and catchers scheduled to report for the start of spring training in less than two weeks, the narrative surrounding the team’s offseason seemed set in stone – they had swung big at the top of the market (Gerrit Cole, Anthony Rendon, Francisco Lindor) but would head to Arizona having added only at the margins, committing a paltry $15 million (plus possible bonuses) to add three potential bounceback candidates to the pitching staff (Alex Wood, Jimmy Nelson and Blake Treinen). The relative inactivity stirred discontent among a segment of the team’s fan base already grumpy following last fall’s surprising early exit from the postseason. But the Dodgers’ attempts to add an impact player “at the top of the roster,” as Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman put it, might not be over. Trade discussions between the Dodgers and Boston Red Sox regarding outfielder Mookie Betts have percolated on and off througho

Kobe Bryant and crash victims on the mind of OC Bishop as he meets Pope Francis

Image
The news of Kobe Bryant’s death hit the Vatican just as the Orange County bishop and his contingent were preparing to meet Pope Francis. The local group was in Rome for a meeting called the Ad Limina, in which they deliver a five-year summary of their experiences in Orange County to the leaders of the Catholic Church. Monsignor Stephen Doktorcyzk said he was speaking with an employee at a gift shop in Rome shortly after hearing the Kobe news. “He talked about the pride Italians who follow basketball take in Kobe Bryant,” Monsignor Doktorcyzk said from Rome on Friday, Jan. 31. “He (Kobe) spent much of his childhood in a few regions in Italy, and that he could speak the language with fluency along with his undisputed skill at the game of basketball have resulted in not a few Italians taking great pride in his achievements and close association with their homeland. “They are very sad that they lost a native son in such a tragic way.” What followed were several prayers. “The bishops

New baby anteater doing well at Santa Ana Zoo

Image
The public is starting to get glimpses of the newest resident at the Santa Ana Zoo in Prentice Park: a baby giant anteater. Born Nov. 26, the little one is now about 10 pounds, a far cry from the 100 to 130 pounds an adult weights. The baby was born at about 3.5 pounds, and momma is likely noticing the growth spurt. She’ll continue to carry her pup on her back for the next year. No hot water, roaches, rodent droppings: Restaurant inspections in Riverside County, Jan. 24-31

The Riverside Department of Environmental Health announced no closures of restaurants or other food facilities between Jan. 24 and 31, 2020. Non-closure inspections of note Here are selected inspections at facilities that weren’t closed but had other significant issues. Crazy Mel’s Burgers & Bar , at 166 N. Palm Canyon Drive in Palm Springs, was inspected Jan. 29 and received a failing grade of 83/B with two critical violations. There was no hot water when the inspector arrived, but the owner adjusted the water heater and restored hot water by the time the inspection ended. Also, some cooked beef, chicken and chili weren’t being kept hot enough. Among the six lesser violations, the bar dishwasher wasn’t dispensing sanitizer and was impounded, and the restaurant was found to be selling soft-serve ice cream without a permit, so that machine was impounded too. Tom’s #1 , at 18492 Dexter Ave. in Lake Elsinore, was inspected Jan. 24 and received a failing grade of 86/B with one cr
