California had at least 11,150 new cases of the coronavirus and 183 new deaths reported as of Friday, July 31, according to unofficial counts from county websites. Hospitalizations were down for the fourth consecutive day in the state with 7,999. That’s 199 fewer than the previous day. San Bernardino County, which lost its public health director amid the coronavirus pandemic, again has someone without “interim” in their title leading the department. Corwin Porter, the assistant director for nearly five years, is now in charge of the Department of Public Health, which is responsible for tracking COVID-19 cases and deaths and hosting community-testing events. The department also includes the acting health officer, who has been issuing orders meant to slow the spread of the disease. Porter has been serving as interim director after the previous director left in May. “We are very pleased that Corwin will bring his extensive experience to this role serving the residents of San Bernardino County,” County CEO Gary McBride said in a news release. “Through his extensive training and experience, Corwin has built a culture of quality by developing staff and encouraging leadership positions.” Corwin, who has worked for the department for 31 years, was also director of envir

Amid triple-digit temperatures in some areas, brush fires scorched hundreds of acres of dry, Southern California terrain this week. Most recent were a pair of San Fernando Valley area fires, one erupting in Sunland-Tujunga , which burned 10 acres and a second fire that charred at least 25 acres in between Chatsworth and Simi Valley . The blaze had threatened homes on the Ventura County side of the fire, authorities said. Yet despite the hot, dry weather and the difficulty of maneuvering through rugged terrain, Friday’s moderate wind speeds worked in the favor of fire crews, who were able to stop the forward spread of both fires within several hours of ignition.
