The prisoner of intersectionality: Joel Kotkin

When she first announced her run for the White House, Elizabeth Warren seemed a breath of fresh air — a brainy and relentless campaigner for the middle class, willing to take on tech and other oligarchs. As an old colleague who met with her told me, she seemed very much “an old-fashioned New Deal Democrat” focused primarily on addressing the massive inequalities that hurt our society and families. But rather than focus on basic issues that appeal to a wide number of Americans, Warren’s campaign has morphed into something of an intersectional nightmare. The notion of intersectionality holds that progressives must embrace the demands of any of the various strains within the progressive Democratic Party. You cannot just be an economic progressive but must also endorse every demand of militant greens, the Bernie Bro socialists, the professional race hustlers or the extreme feminists. Like one of Pavlov’s dogs, the intersectional habit has led Warren to back the left fringe positions on s

Derwin James finally returns, but Chargers say it’s not too late

DENVER — When Derwin James arrived for the 15th of 18 training camp practices in a walking boot, it shocked many in attendance. That August afternoon altered the Chargers’ 2019 season. After expressing concern for their teammate, Chargers players sounded optimistic about playing without James, who was coming off an All-Pro rookie season. They were gonna be all right, some said. Nothing to worry about. Goals were still the same. It didn’t work out that way as James prepares to make his regular-season debut Sunday against the Denver Broncos at Empower Field at Mile High. James injured his right foot when he intercepted a pass from Drew Brees to close out the first of two joint scrimmages with the New Orleans Saints on Aug. 15. When James wasn’t stretching with his teammates for the second scrimmage, many at Jack Hammett Sports Complex in Costa Mesa had questions. The Chargers answered some with a 32-word injury update that was made public an hour after practice had started. While J

Lakers guard Avery Bradley to miss another week; Kyle Kuzma questionable for Dallas

EL SEGUNDO — For the first time in weeks, Avery Bradley hit the practice floor. There was some good news Saturday following Bradley’s medical re-evaluation: The Lakers’ starting guard was cleared to start “basketball progression.” But the nebulous term means Bradley, who has dealt with a hairline fracture in his right leg, has further to go. He will also miss at least four more games, bringing his total to 13 missed starts for the 17-2 Lakers. The Lakers haven’t lost a game among the nine Bradley has missed, but the impact has been felt defensively: The Lakers have slipped in defensive rating from first to fifth. They’ve sported just the 10th-best defensive rating in the NBA over the past nine games (106.3). Bradley’s recovery has progressed from swimming and running on an Alter-G treadmill to now being able to bear full weight on his injured leg. He’s been a sideline presence as well. Frank Vogel was glad to see him back doing basketball activities. “Well, I’m just happy for him b

Read the pitch deck that Uber founder Garrett Camp created for the ride-hailing giant back in 2008 – before the company became the $120 billion giant it is today (UBER)

Image
It's a big year for Uber. The first name in ride-hailing had a ton of hype around it for the first half of 2019 thanks to its IPO. And though the $8 billion valuation fell well short of speculations of $100 billion, Uber is still one of the biggest names on the market today. With such eye-popping numbers, it's difficult to remember a time when the 10-year-old company wasn't the juggernaut it is today. Uber currently has more than 2 million drivers ferrying passengers in more than 63 countries. But back in August 2008, founder Garrett Camp was laying out his dream of a "next-generation car service" in a slideshow on his computer. Little did he know that dream would grow exponentially into a company that now handles grocery delivery, that has a rapidly growing on-demand food delivery segment in Uber Eats, and is developing a fleet of self-driving taxis. As part of our coverage of the genesis of today's successful companies,   BI Prime   took a look at how C
