Census outreach efforts hampered by coronavirus pandemic

When members of the Orange County Herald Center saw their face-to-face census outreach campaigns screech to a halt with the coronavirus pandemic and statewide lock-downs, they got creative. The Christian nonprofit, which largely engages the Chinese community, quickly shifted gears by getting their youth, most of whom are home because of school closures, engaged in a texting campaign, said Sarah Middleton, census consultant with Charitable Ventures in Costa Mesa, which partners with several nonprofits in the area including the Herald Center. “That is such a brilliant idea at a time when conditions are not ideal,” she said. “I see this kind of creativity from our partners every day when it comes to pulling all stops to figure out how to reach hard-to-reach communities.” The COVID-19 curve ball April 1 is Census Day, a key landmark for the 2020 Census. By this time, every home in California and the United States should have received an invitation to participate in the census count. Pe

Superintendent: Coronavirus likely to keep schools shuttered for academic year

SACRAMENTO – California schools are likely to remain closed for the rest of the academic year as the fight to contain the novel coronavirus continues, the state superintendent of public instruction told local officials Tuesday. “Due to the current safety concerns and needs for ongoing social distancing it currently appears that our students will not be able to return to school campuses before the end of the school year,” state Superintendent Tony Thurmond wrote in a letter released to local school districts. “This is in no way to suggest that school is over for the year,” he continued, “but rather we should put all efforts into strengthening our delivery of education through distance learning.” Thurmond acknowledged that the extended closure could create hardships for some students, families and educators. “However, we are urging a safety first approach out of an abundance of caution,” he said. “As such, we urge that all school districts in California move towards and/or continue t

51 residents, 6 staff at Yucaipa nursing home test positive for coronavirus

Fifty-one residents and six employees at a Yucaipa nursing home have tested positive for the novel coronavirus and two residents have died, San Bernardino County public health officials said Tuesday afternoon, March 31. Seventy-nine specimens were collected from residents and staff at Cedar Mountain Post Acute Rehabilitation, Trudy Raymundo, county public health director, said during a news conference outside Yucaipa City Hall. “There are still some specimens remaining to be processed and results are still pending,” Raymundo said. “But we have talked to the folks at Cedar Mountain and we have let them know to assume at this point that everyone is positive and to take appropriate measures.” Joined by other county officials, Raymundo shared the timeline of the outbreak. On Thursday, March 26, Redlands Community Hospital asked county public health workers to expedite a test for a patient coming from the nursing home, Raymundo said. When the results came back positive, the county not

Airbnb's CEO compared the coronavirus crisis to Hurricane Maria, saying its business will bounce back, just as it did after the storm that ravaged Puerto Rico

Image
Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky on Monday promised hosts that the company's business will bounce back following the coronavirus pandemic, saying that it has weathered crises before. He pointed to what happened after Hurricane Maria devastated Puerto Rico; thousands more property managers are offering accommodations via Airbnb now than they were before. The comparison could be considered to be in poor taste; Puerto Rico as a whole is still recovering from the storm, which killed nearly 3,000 people there. Chesky's message was part of a broader announcement in which Airbnb is setting aside some $260 million to help out hosts. Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories . The coronavirus-related hit to the travel industry may be unprecedented and unexpected, but Airbnb has survived economic crises before and has always come back stronger, company CEO Brian Chesky said Monday on a video message live streamed to the company's property-manager partners. Coronavirus: Parents missing work to care for out-of-school kids could get help under new bill

With schools across California closed to slow the spread of the coronavirus, State Sen. Ling Ling Chang on Monday announced a bill intended to help parents who miss work to care for kids recoup a portion of their lost wages. “There are so many people who have followed the rules; they pay taxes, they save money, they scrape by so their kids can go to college. And now this crisis has taken all of that away,” said Chang, a Republican from Diamond Bar whose 29th District includes portions of Orange, Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties. “I hear from families that are limiting their meals per day to save money or make sure their children have enough food. The extraordinary moment calls for extraordinary responses. And we need to use every tool we have right now.” Chang’s Senate Bill 943 would tap the state’s general fund to expand California’s Paid Family Leave program, which already covers people who miss work to care for a sick family member, have a new child, or are under quarantin
