I Read Comics For the Art

Image
That isn’t to say I don’t love the stories, characters, and writing, which I do, but I can find those things in other mediums like novels and film. You can give me a creatively drawn, beautifully colored, or visually interesting graphic novel with just an okay story and I’ll keep turning the page. The same can’t be said for the reverse. It’s why I don’t understand during the  Marvel Retailer Summit the Marvel Comics Editor-in-Chief saying : There are fewer artists that impact sales than there are writers, Alonso said, and they’re harder to promote…  “We can hype our artists all we want, but I don’t know if we know how many artists, besides maybe McNiven and Coipel, absolutely move the needle on anything to be drawn. His statements did however make me realize this devaluing of artist–coupled with the confusion of every reboot having the same title–is why I don’t read many Marvel titles. Marvel likes to swap artist in a series like they’re interchangeable. As Asher Elbein poi...

6 Comics About Mental Illness

Image
Mental illness is a difficult thing to put into words, let alone draw. Yet having another medium to work in has provided cartoonists and writers with expanded possibilities for representing these difficult experiences, with comics about mental illness. There’s no shortage of more comprehensive lists of comics that explore mental illness. But below are some of the graphic novels and memoirs giving accounts of how it feels to live with a mental illness. Most of these comics about mental illness are at least partly autobiographical, giving the stories a sense of authenticity.   Depresso, or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Embrace Being Bonkers! by Brick This semi-autobiographical account about living with depression is a surprisingly entertaining read. This is partly due to the author’s self-deprecating humor, and partly to the whimsical illustrations, notably a giant lizard who acts as the protagonist’s guardian angel. Depresso is stuffed with small, believable deta...

5 Fiction Books to Cure Your Wanderlust…At Least for a While

Image
I am addicted to the wander. Books have always played a huge role in stoking my wanderlust and inspiring me to travel. But sometimes when I’m stuck where I am for a while, I need a book that will transport me without ever leaving my house, not one that will make my wanderlust worse. Today I want to share some of my favorite books to cure wanderlust. At least for a while. While I’m not a complete nomad, I have moved internationally  three times in the past five years, each time to a place I had never even seen before. Still, I routinely get that itch to explore somewhere new. Like most people I know, I don’t have the ability to drop everything and jetset to a new destination every time I get the urge to be somewhere else. I have these dumb things called “responsibilities” and “limited resources” that are always crushing my dreams.  Here are 5 books that have satisfied my longing to be elsewhere. 1. THE LIGHTKEEPERS by Abbi Geni One of my standout reads from the last f...

Books That Kill: What to Read After Watching The Dirt

Image
I know I can’t be the only one who has become obsessed with Mötley Crüe after watching The Dirt on Netflix. What’s not to love? It’s the ’80s. Douglas Booth plays Nikki Sixx (hnnggg), Machine Gun Kelly plays Tommy Lee, Daniel Webber plays Vince Neil, and Iwan Rheon plays Mick Mars. It’s perfect. Full of debauchery and so, so much sex, drugs, and rock ’n‘ roll. No, I didn’t watch it three times in one week. That’s ridiculous that you would even accuse me of such a thing. Okay, fine, I watched it three times in one week, the third time ending with my partner walking in the door and shrieking “No! Not again!” And then I watched it a fourth time a few weeks later because I was having withdrawals. To wean myself off of the movie, I (of course) had to pick up some books on the subject. Enjoy this delightfully debaucherous list of books that kill (heh, get it? Looks That Kill , books that kill… I’ll see myself out) to read after watching The Dirt. Oh, trigger warning: There are gross amou...

Beyond Poutine: 23 Essential Canadian Cookbooks and Books About Food

Image
Is Canadian cuisine known outside of Canada? I know many non-Canadians have heard of butter tarts, Nanaimo bars, and poutine (of course), our most famous culinary export. But there’s a lot more to Canadian food than that! Geographically, Canada is a big country with many different climates and seasonal ingredients. We enjoy long-lasting food traditions from Indigenous communities, signature dishes created by French and British settlers, and a culinary culture influenced by our huge population of immigrants from around the world. Here are 27 essential Canadian cookbooks, along with a few books about Canadian food culture, that’ll have you eating like a Canadian. General Canadian Cookbooks Canada’s Favourite Recipes by Rose Murray and Elizabeth Baird Rose Murray and Elizabeth Baird are respected Canadian food writers. This is one of my go-to Canadian cookbooks because it’s a great introduction to many basic Canadian dishes. Canada has so many different cultural influences, from Frenc...
