Wait continues for new guidance on high school competition as state warns against travel for youth sports

The head of California’s Health and Human Services Agency hasn’t offer yet promised new guidance for high school and youth sports competition, but he did deliver a message Friday, Nov. 13, for athletes and families traveling out of state for games. California joined forces with Washington and Oregon on Friday to urge against travel and to recommend visitors or those returning home from travel outside these states to self-quarantine for 14 days to slow the spread of the coronavirus. The advisory comes as many youth and club teams in California are traveling out of state for games, which have been prohibited in the state since Aug. 3. “If a family is going to take the risk and travel out of state to compete or practice for a youth sport or any sport, we’re asking them, first off, not to do that, to make the decision to stay local, stay home,” Health and Human Services Secretary Dr. Mark Ghaly said Friday during a media briefing about the coronavirus pandemic. “(If) you make that d...

Senior Living: Understanding Alzheimer’s disease and living a fulfilling life after diagnosis

Image
Your body and mind go through many different changes as you age. Most older adults will begin to experience some form of normal age-related changes in thinking and memory, however, some experience more severe forms of memory loss, called dementia.  According to the Alzheimer’s Association , dementia is a general term for loss of memory, language, problem-solving and other thinking abilities that are severe enough to interfere with daily life. Dementia isn’t a single disease, it is an overall term that covers a range of medical conditions.  Omid Omidvar, M.D. (Courtesy of MemorialCare Long Beach Medical Center) The most common cause of dementia is Alzheimer’s disease, which accounts for 60% to 80% of all dementia cases. Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive disease that begins with mild memory loss and gradually worsens over the years due to irreversible loss of function in the brain.  The greatest known risk factor for Alzheimer’s is increasing age. Most people with...

Galaxy front office understands the fans’ frustrations, but remains hopeful for club’s future

After missing the playoffs for the third time in the last four years, the Galaxy heads into the off-season with more questions than answers. The longtime supporters groups have voiced their displeasure throughout the season and the front office has heard it. “As we head into what is a crucial off-season, we’re spending quite a bit of time evaluating everything,” Galaxy President Chris Klein said Wednesday. “That starts with me and certainly I hold my hand up and take responsibility, not only for the results that are not up to our standards for this year, but for the last couple of years. “I’m spending a great deal of time evaluating myself, our decisions and I know that when we look at this, the responsibility does not fall on a coach, we all have responsibility in this and in saying that I am confident and hopeful for our future. I’ve been with this club for 13 years and I know what it stands for.” The Galaxy fired Guillermo Barros Schelotto with three games remaining in the regul...

Authentic, Monomoy Girl add exclamation marks to their Horse of the Year bids

The Horse of the Year debate is arguably down to two serious contenders after the 37th Breeders’ Cup at Keeneland Race Course, and one of the candidates holds a slightly more impressive resume than the other. Authentic put a huge exclamation mark on his bid, going gate to wire to win one of the deepest Classics in years by 2 1/4 lengths, giving Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez his first win in the race in 20 tries. But trainer Bob Baffert was not about to anoint his 3-year-old colt Horse of the Year. He preferred to leave that to the Eclipse Award voters. “If I had a vote I would tell you my vote, but my vote means nothing,” said Baffert, who won two Breeders’ Cup races at Keeneland to run his career total to 17 — three behind all-time leader D. Wayne Lukas’ 20. “He better be in the conversation because what we saw yesterday was pretty impressive.” Then there’s the feel-good story of Monomoy Girl, who missed all of 2019 because of a mild bout with colic and a pulled gluteal muscl...

Breeders’ Cup roundup: Monomoy Girl takes Distaff again

LEXINGTON, Ky. — Even-money favorite Monomoy Girl blew by the leaders around the final turn and held off a challenge by 14-1 shot Valiance to win her second 1 1/8-mile Distaff at the Breeders’ Cup World Championships on Saturday at Keeneland Race Course. The star 5-year-old won for the 13th time in 15th races, giving trainer Brad Cox his fourth win at this Breeders’ Cup to tie the record. “I thought she was better than she’d ever been coming into this, I really, really did, and I think she proved that,” Cox said. “Just a tremendous filly. She’s a champion.” Two years after winning the race in 1:49.79 at Churchill Downs, Monomoy Girl won Saturday in 1:47.84, paying $4.00 to win, $3.00 to place and $2.40 to show. Valiance was second and Dunbar Road third. Preakness winner Swiss Skydiver didn’t finish in the top three after stumbling out of the starting gate. Trainer Kenny McPeek chose to run Swiss Skydiver against older fillies and mares in the Distaff rather than going against the c...

Corky Carroll: Be a gremmie all over again

Today I thought it would be a good time to deal with an issue that plagues many older surfers, and some not that old as well. When you have surfed for a reasonable amount of time, and have reached a decent level of skills, you feel pretty confident that those skills are gonna stick with you forever.  But then, for some reason or another, you stop surfing and don’t come back to it for a long time.  And when you do, there is the reality that the skills you used to have are just not there, or at least not the same. I hear many people saying they don’t want to get back into surfing because they will have to “learn all over again,” and it’s just too hard when you get older.  And, for the most part, this is true.  You do have to learn most of it all over again and it is hard.  No doubt.  But, it’s also really fun and very cool to do. Soooo, is it worth it to you or not? But then there is a completely different way to look at it, and this is what I want to bri...

Rams miss Jalen Ramsey’s big-play defense in loss to Miami

Jalen Ramsey might have altered a footnote in NFL history if he’d been there to prevent Tua Tagovailoa’s first touchdown pass. But Ramsey, the Rams’ All-Pro defensive back, missed Sunday’s game against the Dolphins in Miami after waking up ill, the team said. David Long replaced him, and it was Long who couldn’t stop DeVante Parker from catching a 3-yard pass from Tagovailoa that started the Dolphins’ 28-0 scoring run in the Rams’ 28-17 loss. “Jalen brings that energy. He brings that big hit, that big deflection, that confidence, just that raw energy that you can’t duplicate,” Rams safety John Johnson said. “I think David did a great job, did what he had to do. He gave up that touchdown, but he was right there.” Johnson said players knew Ramsey wasn’t feeling well but didn’t know until game time that he wouldn’t play. The team was prohibited from saying if Ramsey was tested for COVID-19 Sunday. But coach Sean McVay said Ramsey would fly home with the team, which indicated the vi...

Angels’ two assistant GMs to leave organization

Jonathan Strangio and Steve Martone, the two assistant general managers left at the top of the Angels baseball operations department after Billy Eppler was fired , are both leaving the organization. Their contracts expired Saturday. Strangio informed the club months ago of a plan to relocate to the East Coast for family reasons at the conclusion of his contract. The reason for Martone’s departure is unclear. Strangio had spent nine years with the Angels, the last four as an assistant general manager. Martone was hired by Eppler early in his tenure. The Angels are losing two of the top executives who could have helped to run the baseball operations while the club conducts a thorough search for Eppler’s replacement. So far there are 10 confirmed candidates on the list for interviews, with a decision not expected for at least a few weeks. Tony La Russa, who had been a special assistant in baseball operations and was said to be helping to lead the department during the transition, is ...

Another Horse Dies From Racing Injury at Los Alamitos

CYPRESS (CNS) – Another horse has died at Los Alamitos Race Course — at least the 26th horse to die from a racing or training injury at the Cypress track this year. Hit It Up was injured on Oct. 23 in the eighth race. He was a 2-year- old gelding owned by Ernesto Parra and trained by Ramiro Lopez Zuazo. His jockey in the fatal race was Ruben Lozano. A Los Alamitos official told City News Service on Oct. 24 that the horse walked inside the equine medical transport unit on his own and walked out of it on his own after the injury, and was back in his barn with his trainer the next morning. He died Oct. 28, according to the California Horse Racing Board. Dr. Rick Arthur, equine medical director for the CHRB, told the Los Angeles Times that Hit It Up was examined by a board vet and by Zuazo’s veterinarian. Arthur added that the injury was consistent with a spine injury but was awaiting a necropsy result before determining the official cause of death. In addition to the 26 racing and tr...

Chargers seek normalcy before facing Melvin Gordon, Broncos

COSTA MESA — Chargers coach Anthony Lynn and his former running back Melvin Gordon tried to downplay the magnitude of Sunday’s game in Denver. It was just another game on the schedule between the Chargers (2-4) and Denver Broncos (2-4), they both said. But it’s hard to believe Gordon doesn’t have an extra incentive to beat a Chargers team that let him walk in free agency, or that a head coach doesn’t badly want to end a seven-game losing streak against division opponents. The Chargers return to Empower Field at Mile High this weekend, the site of their previous AFC West victory in the 2018 regular-season finale. The Chargers went 0-6 in the division last year and started 0-1 this season after losing to the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 2. This game means more, but perhaps the Chargers and Broncos were just glad there was a game still scheduled as of Friday evening. Both teams canceled a practice this week because of a positive COVID-19 test to one of their offensive linemen. Lynn scr...
