Two men killed in pair of Colton shootings within less than a mile, minutes apart

Two men were killed in a pair of shootings early Saturday morning in Colton, occurring within minutes of each other, separated only by less than a mile, authorities said.

Investigators have yet to determine whether the two shootings were related to one another.

“We’re looking into the possibility that they’re connected,” said Colton police Lt. Ray Mendez.

The first shooting was reported to police about 1:56 a.m. after someone had called authorities about a man found lying unresponsive on the street in the 700 block of North Kippy Drive, the Colton Police Department said in a news release.

Officers found the victim, identified by authorities as a 23-year-old man from Lucerne Valley, with multiple life-threatening gunshot wounds.

The man was transported to a local hospital where he died of his injuries, police said.

Minutes later, at 2:07 a.m., officers responded to the 1000 block of West Kimberly Avenue for a second shooting, police said.

Located less than a mile from the Kippy Drive shooting, officers found a man in his 30s or 40s with at least one gunshot wound to his upper body. Police said he was pronounced dead where he lay on the street.

A forensic team from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department assisted Colton police detectives in analyzing both shooting scenes throughout Saturday.

Police did not immediately provide any suspect information.
