Jacob Kleepsies, lead representative for the Southwest Regional Council of Carpenters, said 35 carpenters from Local 951 in Riverside are working on the project and expect to finish in a few days — well before Veterans Day.

“We thought that it was awful that their personal tools and materials got stolen,” Kleepsies said.

Carpenters volunteered their time, he said, and Squires Lumber donated two-by-fours and plywood. Michael Buchner, post commander, said he was stunned by the carpenters’ generosity.

“It’s a story of something that was tragic that has turned into a triumph,” he said. “They’re like angels who fell out of the sky.”

Buchner estimated the value of items stolen the night of Oct. 17 at between $20,000 and $30,000.
