Police in standoff with scissors-wielding suspect in Murrieta

A standoff between police and a person they said brandished a pair of scissors at them shut down a street in Murrieta on Monday afternoon as people were attempting to commute home Monday, Aug. 31.

Officers contacted the suspect near the 39000 block of Winchester Road, Murrieta police Capt. Tony Conrad said. He allegedly threatened them, then fled to a van parked in a nearby shopping center.

Police fired pepper balls into the van, but the person refused to exit the vehicle as of 5 p.m., Conrad said. Both directions of Winchester were closed between Murrieta Hot Springs road and Frontage Drive, police said on social media.

Information regarding what led up to the incident or why officers and the suspect were in contact with each other was not immediately released.
