LA County orders curfew in wake of George Floyd protests

A curfew has been put into place for Sunday night, May 31, for all of Los Angeles County.

The curfew, from 6 p.m. until 6 a.m. Monday, June 1, has been ordered following days of violent protests in LA and throughout the country, sparked by the death of George Floyd while in Minneapolis police custody.

“Residents should remain in their homes and only go out to seek medical care or to go to an essential job,” Supervisor Janice Hahn tweeted Sunday afternoon.

Many cities through LA County, as well as Santa Ana in Orange County ordered curfews earlier Sunday.

LA County Sheriff Alex Villanueva said via Twitter the order “supersedes all other local curfews currently in effect” within LA County.

Villanueva and Kathryn Barger, chair of of the LA County Board of Supervisors, enacted the countywide curfew Sunday afternoon “in response to civil disturbances.”

Floyd, 46, was an unarmed black man who died May 25 in police custody after a Minneapolis officer kneeled on his neck. The officer was arrested Friday and charged with murder in a case that sparked protests across the United States.

The National Guard has been brought in to Los Angeles after Gov. Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency Saturday night for L.A. County.
