The Los Angeles Wildcats limited the New York Guardians to just a field goal in the second half of Saturday’s XFL game at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, but that wasn’t enough to come out of the cold with a victory.

The Wildcats had offensive problems of their own, managing just a third-quarter touchdown in the second half on their way to a 17-14 defeat in front of an announced crowd of 12,116 in chilly East Rutherford, N.J.

Quarterback Josh Johnson completed 25 of 40 passes for 330 yards and two scores, but the Wildcats managed just 40 yards rushing and were 2 of 12 on third-down conversion in suffering their third loss in their first four games of existence.

Johnson, a former NFL journeyman, was without receiver Nelson Spruce, who sat out the game with a knee injury suffered in last week’s 39-9 victory over the DC Defenders. Johnson had a 4-yard touchdown pass to Tre McBride with seven seconds left in the first quarter and struck on a 42-yard scoring bomb to Saeed Blacknall with 4:45 left in the third quarter.

McBride led the Wildcats with 8 catches for 127 yards, but he and his offensive teammates were unable to sustain drives, particularly in the second half.

“I thought we had our opportunities to win the game, and we did not take advantage of them,” Wildcats coach Winston Moss said. “Whether it was special teams, with a missed field goal, whether it was the offense being a little inconsistent … same thing with the defense. We missed a lot of tackles today, busted some coverages. So this was a team loss.”

The victory snapped a two-game losing streak for the Guardians (2-2), who were without injured starting quarterback Matt McGloin. Luis Perez, who once competed for a spot on the Rams’ roster and was with the Wildcats before being traded to New York prior to the season opener, completed 18 of 26 passes for 150 yards and one touchdown.
