From Easy fire to Hill fire, here’s how fast the winds were – and where – in Southern California

It’s true. Winds are not an unusual thing this time of year. And on Wednesday, they may not have even broken any records. But on a day of extreme fire danger, the gusts were enough to wreak havoc across Southern California, forcing residents from their homes from Simi Valley to Riverside County.

The strongest of the winds on Wednesday gusted up to 76 mph, but they were mostly in the 40-mph and 50-mph range, helping fuel numerous fires throughout Southern California, the National Weather Service reported. And, it’s not just fire, but the winds also down trees and power lines. Power outages are possible. Even travel becomes difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles.

Most of the heavy winds came in the mountain areas as opposed to more of the flat-land areas, Lisa Phillips, a National Weather Service meteorologist, said in a phone interview Wednesday.

These winds, while one of the causes of the fires throughout Southern California, didn’t break any records, Phillips said.

“We have strong winds, we have very dry air, low humidity persisting for a long period of time and very dry fuel,” she said. “The weather conditions are severe.”

  • Oat Mountain, 57 mph, 9:50 a.m. — LA County
  • Sandberg, 53 mph, 8:08 a.m. — Northern LA County
  • Tonner Canyon, 52 mph, 9:57 a.m. — LA County line at Diamond Bar
  • Porter Ranch, 47 mph, 8:35 a.m. — LA County
  • Chatsworth, 45 mph, 10:36 a.m. — LA County
  • Saugus, 44 mph, 8:57 a.m. — LA County
  • Mill Creek, 44 mph, 8:53 a.m. — San Bernardino County
  • Sylmar, 43 mph, 9:35 a.m. — LA County
  • Antelope Valley, 43 mph, 9 a.m. — Northern LA County
  • Castaic Lake, 40 mph, 7:50 a.m. — LA County
  • Newhall Pass, 38 mph, 9:56 a.m. — LA County
  • Lake Hughes Road, 38 mph, 10 a.m. — LA County
  • Acton , 38 mph, 10 a.m. — LA County
