This dog’s new job is comforting paramedics in San Bernardino County

Faces light up when Rampart’s around.

That kind of joy is exactly what the 5-month-old goldendoodle aims to bring American Medical Response crews in San Bernardino County as the agency’s newest therapy dog.

Once fully trained, Rampart will offer comfort and emotional support to AMR employees throughout the county. He’ll also visit with crews on difficult calls, including mass shootings and fatal incidents.

Rampart, named after the hospital in the TV show “Emergency!,” is based at AMR’s Victorville office with his handler, Operations Manager Michael Romo, but will make rounds to the company’s Redlands and Rancho Cucamonga facilities.

His brothers, Baxter and Oakley, are therapy dogs in San Diego and Ventura counties.

What does it take to be a therapy dog?

“Basic obedience is a big thing,” Romo said. “The other is being calm when people are upset. Dogs can sense when people are upset and just being a cuddle bug.”
