Chargers seek normalcy before facing Melvin Gordon, Broncos

COSTA MESA — Chargers coach Anthony Lynn and his former running back Melvin Gordon tried to downplay the magnitude of Sunday’s game in Denver. It was just another game on the schedule between the Chargers (2-4) and Denver Broncos (2-4), they both said. But it’s hard to believe Gordon doesn’t have an extra incentive to beat a Chargers team that let him walk in free agency, or that a head coach doesn’t badly want to end a seven-game losing streak against division opponents. The Chargers return to Empower Field at Mile High this weekend, the site of their previous AFC West victory in the 2018 regular-season finale. The Chargers went 0-6 in the division last year and started 0-1 this season after losing to the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 2. This game means more, but perhaps the Chargers and Broncos were just glad there was a game still scheduled as of Friday evening. Both teams canceled a practice this week because of a positive COVID-19 test to one of their offensive linemen. Lynn scr...

Voters report smooth operations on first day Orange County’s 168 voting centers are open

Image
Some voters had to wait in line to cast a ballot, but the first day of widespread in-person voting in Orange County appears to have gone well overall. On Friday, Oct. 30, 168 vote centers around the county opened their doors so people could vote in a booth, return a mail ballot, or at some locations, drive through and hand their ballot to a poll worker without leaving their car. Del Mar track announcer Trevor Denman will miss fall meet

Good news for Trevor Denman fans: The iconic track announcer has no desire to retire anytime soon despite the fact he’s been missing from the Del Mar announcer’s booth the entire year. Denman, 68, has been home at his 500-acre farm in Minnesota out of concerns for COVID-19. He missed his first summer meet this year since taking over for Harry Henson in 1984, and he’ll be absent again beginning Saturday when Del Mar kicks off its seventh fall meet with substitute announcer Larry Collmus in the booth. But hold no fears. Denman misses Del Mar and he’s looking forward to returning for the 2021 summer meet. “You can never judge, but I’ve got between five, 10 years (of work left), and even more,” Denman said during a Friday phone interview. “I’m not ready to just throw in the towel right now and stay here. I love the farm, but I’m here for nine months of the year, and (Del Mar) actually gives you something to look forward to. You think, ‘OK, come July we’re going back to San Diego.’” In ...

It’s time for Dodgers to start planning for 2021 defense

The offseason has already begun with 147 players declared free agents the morning after the Dodgers’ first World Series celebration in 32 years. The market figures to be flooded with more free agents than ever as teams address the financial losses caused by the pandemic this year and try to plan for an uncertain revenue situation in 2021. MLB hasn’t had back-to-back champions since the New York Yankees won three consecutive titles from 1998-2000. In that time, only two NL pennant winners have managed to defend their titles – the Philadelphia Phillies in 2008-09 and the Dodgers in 2017-18. Here’s a look at where the Dodgers’ roster stands heading into their first offseason as defending World Series champions in 32 years: Player … 2020 salary (total before being prorated for short season) … 2021 contract status PITCHERS Clayton Kershaw … $31 million … Signed through 2021 ($31 million in 2021) Kershaw’s mid-career evolution has been a rousing success but the specter of injury always...

Newsom unveils $25 million COVID-19 testing lab in Valencia

Image
Gov. Gavin Newsom visited the Southland on Friday to unveil a new COVID-19 testing lab in Valencia that will boost California’s testing capacity, reduce turnaround time for results and create hundreds of jobs. The $25 million facility, at 28545 Livingston Ave., was converted for its new use by diagnostics company  PerkinElmer under a contract with the state. It will begin processing tests in November. It’s expected to handle up to 150,000 tests per day by March with a turnaround time of 24 to 48 hours.   The additional testing capacity will allow California to better serve schools, healthcare providers and communities of color, which are at higher risk of contracting the virus. It comes just as flu season arrives and the need for testing is expected to spike statewide because the symptoms of COVID-19 and the flu are similar. Figures released Friday, Oct. 30 by the California Department of Public Health show 4,014 new COVID cases, bringing the state’s total to nearly 917,00...

Santa Ana hopes to open new homeless navigation center in early 2021

Image
Santa Ana is set to work on a new city-funded navigation and recuperative care center for homeless people after a kickoff ceremony at the Carnegie Avenue site on Thursday, Oct. 29. The 200-bed facility is expected to be ready in early spring and replace The Link shelter that opened as a temporary site in November 2018. The parking lot gathering of city officials and representatives of homeless services provider Illumination Foundation wasn’t quite a groundbreaking since architects will renovate the two-story industrial building at 1815 Carnegie Ave., rather than raze it and start from scratch. Still, the speeches expressed the optimism of a new beginning for the hundreds of people the facility will serve. Councilwoman Nelida Mendoza said the city strives for a solution to homelessness that is “dignified, affordable and provides relief.” “The center is just what we needed,” she said.   Interior of a new permanent homeless navigation center under construction in Santa Ana, CA...

Festival Pass: Finally, some good news for 2020! A beloved SoCal venue is saved

Image
Festival Pass is a newsletter that lands in your inbox weekly. But during prime festival season you get bonus editions, too! Subscribe now . Keeping up with the spooky spirit of Halloween week, one Southern California venue is back from the dead! Last week, Kelli Skye Fadroski reported that Chain Reaction, the hallowed all-ages venue in Anaheim, announced it was closing due to the pandemic. But a bunch of musicians and fans rallied to save the venue . Now this is the kind of zombie story I can get behind. Almost a year ago to the day I was at Chain Reaction for No Motiv’s “And the Sadness Prevails” 20th anniversary show, which was fan-freaking-tastic. I also had a blast looking at all of the T-shirts stapled to the wall and pointing out to my husband which ones I picked up from bygone Warped Tours. I’ve also been to a bunch of shows at the area’s casinos, where they don’t have portions of my old wardrobe stapled to the walls, thankfully. Alex Groves talked with the casinos, who bri...
